# 1642  Friday: Championship Night

The weather was great, the stands were full of fan and the performances on the field were the best. All in all, it was one of those nights where the real fans were sorry that all the teams couldn't win. Penn Yan, however was the winner in the B/C tournament with a 5-2 win over Honeoye Falls-Lima and Canandaigua won the Class A Championship with a 12-10 win over Penfield.

The 2005 Section Five Tournaments are over and the Champions have been determined. An All Tournament Team is selected for each Class Tournament. The MVP for Class A was senior attackman, Dan Groot of Canandaigua. In Class B/C the MVP was Penn Yan's, sennior attackman, Jon Van Houten.

# 1639  Tuesday: Semi Finals

Penn Yan and Honeoye Falls-Lima are going to the New York State Tournament as a result of tonight's wins in the semi final round at Irondequoit. Penn Yan earned the trip with a 12-6 win over #2 seeded Waterloo and HF-L earned their first trip to the States with a 13-7 win over Geneva. In the Class A semi finals, the top two seeds won as Penfield defeated Schroeder 15-9 and Canandaigua won their game over Fairport 9-5.e had 14 saves for HF-L.

Geneva (#3) beat Brighton (#2) 17-6 and Waterloo (#3) beat Aquinas (#2) in the B/C tournament. In the Class A bracket, all of the higher seeded teams won, setting up the semi final round on Tuesday at Aquinas (Class A) and Irondequoit (Class B/C).

The County coaches recently announced the list of all stars for 2005. Pittsford attackman,Jake Boyce, Penfield midfielderMike Thon and Webster Schroeder midfielder,Mike Catalino were named to the All America team. Brighton senior attackman,James Ryan was named Academic All American.

# 1631  Monday: Last Day (Almost)

Pittsford beat R-H today and will host Thomas on Tuesday, but the rest of the teams in Section Five are now finished with the regular season. Penfield dodged the bullet again today with a one goal win at Fairport and completed their regular season undefeated. Canandaigua finished with a win taking them to 16-1 with their only loss to Baldwinsville. Brighton finished with a win over Gates Chili and lost only to HF-L (twice) to end their season at 14-2. HF-L finished with a win over Hilton and lost only to Schroeder this season.

It was the last weekend in the regular season and many games were played early to accommodate preparations for proms and balls. Pittsford nearly spoiled Penfield's undefeated season for the second year in a row. Schroeder won a big win against Amherst of Section Six and Brighton had a close win with Churchville-Chili. Meanwhile, Hilton and Spencerport combined for 32 goals in their game.

Fairport won another close one, this time against Rush-Henrietta, Geneva was the winner against Victor, Spencerport won a close one against Churchville-Chili and McQuaid Jesuit won their last GRALL contest, making them Co-Champions with Aquinas. Schroeder took a win from Irondequoit and five other games were played today.

The rematch of HF-L and Brighton drew attention tonight and the Cougars again were the victors, but in a closer game than back in early April. McQuaid Jesuit won another game by a single goal, as did Victor in their game with Waterloo. Canandaigua's Head Coach John Johnson won his 350th game. Ten other games were played in Section Five on Thursday.

It was a full day of lacrosse under cloudy but warm skies. Fairport won a close game against vi sting Irondequoit, and Gates has a one goal victory in the battle of the Chilis. Hilton won in overtime, but there were a number of blowouts as Canandaigua, Penn Yan, Geneva and Penfield each had easy wins.

With the exception of one make up game, Saturday was "Non-League" Day in Section Five. Penn Yan beat Schroeder 8-7 and Orchard Park beat Fairport 10-9. Surprises came in the form of Canandaigua over Irondequoit 15-3 and Rush-Henrietta over Victor 9-5.

Livonia increased their record to one win one loss with a thrilling 11-10 sudden victory double overtime win over Haverling at Saunders field. The winning goal was scored on an isolation play by senior midfielder Josh Hendrickson with 2:27 left in the second overtime period.

Because of the hospitality of Irondequoit High School and Nazareth College, seven games were played on synthetic turf today that probably would not have been played on home field grass. As a result more than 350 players and their fans enjoyed a cold but clear and sunny day with a number of great opening day efforts.

Canandaigua took a 6-2 halftime lead and beat Fairport 10-4 in the first game of the semifinals. In the second game, however, Penfield needed an overtime goal by junior middie, Mike Thon to beat Irondequoit, 10-9 and advance to the finals.

This was the last chance for regular season games in Section Five. Eleven games were scheduled under the cold and rain of upstate New York. Canandaigua won big at home and maintained their undefeated season. Penfield lost to host Pittsford and dropped to 15-1.

Penfield had a close call with a comeback win against host Fairport, 9-8, and Canandaigua had no trouble in their 19-7 victory over Newark. Livonia had an overtime win against McQuaid Jesuit as they won 5-4.

Canandaigua and Penfield remained undefeated in Section Five and are among only seven teams statewide to have perfect records. Canandaigua beat Victor 11-3 and Penfield broke a 6-6 half-time tie with five third quarter goals to beat Webster Schroeder, 13-7.

# 1548  Thursday: Brighton and Fairport Pull Upsets

Brighton, seeded number 4th in Class B beat the top seed, Honeoye Falls, 15-11 in the semi finals, and Fairport (#5) beat Pittsford (#4), 11-6 in the Class A quarter finals and the rest of the seeds won out. Geneva (#3) looked like they would upset Waterloo (#2) as they led 8-1 when the game was halted for lightning with about nine minutes left in the game. That game will be finished on Friday (time and place TBD).

 St. John Fisher College. Penfield scored the first three goals and looked like they might be the winners, but the Braves took a time out, settled down and scored two goals in the last two minutes of the first quarter, before going on to win the Class A championship, 10-7 before a packed crowd at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford.

The 2004 campaign began Saturday with the two games of the season. Penfield defeated Oswego of Section 3 (Syracuse) 11-7 behind the leading effort of junior, Mike Thon who scored 3 goals and an assist. Ryan O'Donnell, Tim Pfeffer and Mike Arvan each added 2g for the Patriots. Goalkeeper, Shawn Sullivan, recorded 18 saves for Penfield (1-0).

The Monroe County coaches recently announced the list of all stars for 2003. Irondequoit, who won the County title this year, took top honors with seven players including All American midfielder, Mark Johnson. Penfield and Webster Schroeder each received five first team players. Schroeder's attackman. BJ Linder was also named to the All America Team.
